Full Flight

Last night I had a shoot for this band called, "Full Flight". We shot a few outside in the alley before the show. I suggested that since they are a heavy metal band, I'd process a few of them with this "grunge/edgy" style.

These guys aren't actors; my instructions to them were to look "bad". This look is their interpretation of "bad". Actually, they look more "bad" on stage. It was difficult since this is the first time I've worked with them and the only one I knew is the bass guitarist, Igor, on the left. I'll probably be posting some of the photos of the stage show sometime this week. Not all will be digitally enhanced.

We're currently looking for an aviation graveyard to shoot more. Not much luck so far.

What do you all think of this style?

I totally agree that the post production and lighting technique should reflect the characteristic of the subject(s). I love the final product.

Thank you so much, Andrea. I hope to see you today at the Strobist Meetup, if you can make it.

It's great to see you step outside of your normal style and show some of your other skills. Performers always appreciate it when your imagery enhances their persona. They should be very happy with your work.

Thank you, Jim. I'm hoping they like it.

For about 20 years, I photographed musicians and just got tired of it. I still photograph a couple bands when I'm in CT, but I've done nothing here. It's about time I get out there. It's something I forgot how much fun I had doing.

Truthfully, this look gets me a bit out of my comfort zone but when I look at it again I feel excited for you to do something different and that it came out so well. The band members must be thrilled. Keep that nice edge, Loyce!

Thanks, Margo. I gave Igor a sample and he asked if I had it "regular" still. I guess he's not too thrilled. I haven't heard from the others, yet.

I told him that he should look at what other heavy metal bands are doing before he makes any decisions. The "regular" one is safe and sound. I did this one with a virtual copy to see how they liked it.

I haven't been following your blog for too long, but when I just checked in (I've been on vacation), I thought I had the wrong blog! When I come back to shoot a subject I haven't done for awhile, I think I se things in a different light, I have a fresh perspective and I thinks it makes me a better photographer. Great shot, and these guys look bad!

You are so right, Karen. Everytime I photograph something a bit out of my element it refreshes my eye, and keeps the passion lit up for me. I think if we keep doing the same thing over and over, it gets static, and we get bored. We all need to kick things up a bit every now and then.

Thanks much for your comment.

That's a bad ass picture, Loyce! Came out really nice.. I like both regular one and the one with the effect! Igor showed me the regular one.
Next time we play you should come out again.
